BELL WORKS ROOFTOP HOTEL

Completion: Spring 2016 Site: Holmdale, NJ Size: 200,000sf (168 keys)

After sitting vacant for years, the 1.9 million square foot Bell Labs is under re-development as an incubator office park, includes a theater, event center. Given the scale and location, a hotel seems a natural amenity for the complex. LUBRANO CIAVARRA’s proposal for a hotel sited on the roof of Eero Saarinen’s Bell Labs embraces Saarinen’s big plan move of puling the circulation to the perimeter or exterior edge of the building creating corridors of socialization. Paths of circulation organize clusters of rooms punctuated by hotel amenities such as a sky lobby, restaurant, lounge, pool deck and spa. Three room types are characterized by Work, Play and Inspire – increasing in size respectively. Embracing the mid-century modern aesthetic inspired by the year the building was opened, 1962, each room faces out to either the existing landscape of the park; the newly constructed landscape of the green roof; or the existing Saarinen building structure itself.
