Interior Design Magazine and ICFF’s NYCxDESIGN winner 2018
Sited on the 86th floor of 1WTC, the TWA Lounge frames view out to the active construction site of the new LUBRANO CIAVARRA designed TWA Hotel at JFK International Airport. The custom-designed sales office speaks to Eero Saarinen’s visionary structure at the TWA Flight Center, but is thoroughly contemporary in its scale and detailing. LUBRANO CIAVARRA introduces the energy of the swooping “total” environment of Saarinen’s the Flight Center into the office building, through the use of continuous spaces and an active ceiling plane. Glowing Newmat ceilings and a double knife edge light cove at the ceiling in the new TWA Lounge reinforce the energy of flight. Penny Tiles, custom TWA-inspired millwork, travertine steps, a custom-made oval Solari Board and “Chili Pepper Red” carpet – a color created by Saarinen just for the terminal – permeate the space and evoke the aesthetic of the “swinging 60s.” The new hotel buildings for the TWA Hotel, designed by LUBRANO CIAVARRA.
