RICHARD AVEDON RETROSPECTIVE AT THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART

For nine months in 2002, LUBRANO CIAVARRA had the honor of working with photographer Richard Avedon on the design of his “Portraits” retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Working directly with Avedon – in large-scale models only – the firm came to understand his innate sense of scale, foreground and background relationships. These understandings formed the basis of their design for the Avedon Foundation at Yoshi Taniguchi’s Museum Office Building at MoMA upon the photographer’s passing. In addition to being the only outside Design Architect to do work at the interiors, the firm was also commissioned to take inventory of Avedon’s negatives and prints at his Upper East Side Studio for which they designed a Solander Box Wall which houses Avedon’s archive in 180 engraver’s print boxes.
