Manhattan School of Music Student Union
Completion: September 2021 Site: New York, NY Size: 4,520sf
The renovation of the existing lounge space at the Manhattan School of Music was transformed into a new Student Union where all new finishes and light fixtures were installed including all new carpet, paint, baseboards, and track lighting. As students return to campus, the design called for natural elements that would make students feel more comfortable being indoors, especially with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Moss walls were installed for natural greenery in the space and acoustic wood ceiling panels were installed in the ceilings to mitigate sound transmission from the Student Union into the adjacent spaces. A wood feature wall with reflective strips of metal was also installed under the existing skylight to highlight the school’s emblem and allow for natural light to bounce throughout the space. A wooden stepped seating area was installed in the space to allow for small student gatherings. All new furniture that are lightweight and flexible were included in the scope to allow for various types of seating and collaboration including lounge seating and ones for studying and eating.
The new Student Union strives to be a hub for the students, where they can eat, work, and gather within their school.
