MAISON
Completion: February 2019 Site: New York, NY Size: 3,400sf
Designed as a sanctuary from the distractions of home life and family demands, MAISON is an Upper East Side private members club where women – especially mothers – can work, relax, learn, and connect. Upon entering the space, members are greeted with a custom- designed white oak millwork reception desk. Large- scale concrete terrazzo and scalloped leather wall tiles add soft color and texture to the muted palette of the space. A wash of natural light from the East- facing curtainwall peaks through the floor- to- ceiling shelving, offering a glimpse of the bright, open space that is to come.
The main space offers a variety of seating and work surfaces for any given activity. The height of the emerald green velvet sectional sofa, the slim dining table, and the bar- height island ascend from the casual soft seating to the lively eating and drinking space. Rich Vermont Verde marble on the island becomes a statement piece against the minimal white quartz and white oak cabinetry. Natural light floods the space through the Southern and Eastern curtainwall facades, diffused with sheer, white linen curtains.
Procession through the club becomes more intimate and quiet as members move from the social areas to the serene Library to the North. The Work Area features a custom floating desk along the window wall for independent work, and a custom banquette for collaborative work. The Library offers soft seating areas for quiet conversation with a vintage fireplace and large work tables separated by custom bookshelf units for semi- private meetings. Primarily an open plan, spaces of work and leisure are described through carefully choreographed light fixture and furniture installation, giving members “freedom to breathe”.
